Rising majestically above Arusha National Park, Mount Meru stands as Tanzania's second-highest peak and the fifth tallest in Africa. Often chosen as the perfect acclimatization trek before conquering Kilimanjaro, Meru rewards adventurers with a more technical and exhilarating ascent.
Over an unforgettable three-day journey, climbers traverse diverse landscapes teeming with wildlife from elegant giraffes and powerful buffalos to graceful antelopes and lively baboons transforming every step into a true wilderness experience. ITINERARY
DAY-1
ARRIVAL IN KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND TRANSFER TO ARUSHA
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our friendly and experienced driver-guides. After a short introduction, you will be escorted to Arusha for your overnight stay at your reserved hotel. Along the way, the guide will introduce you to this peaceful country and its tourism city.
If time permits, enjoy a complimentary short city tour with your guide. ACCOMMODATION: GOLD CREST HOTEL, ARUSHA
DAY-2
ARUSHA TO NGONGONGARE GATE – TREK TO MIRIAKAMBA HUT
Depart from Arusha and make your way to Ngongongare Gate for registration and permit formalities. From here, your adventure begins as you trek through lush fig tree forests, following a scenic trail toward Miriakamba Hut.
The trek takes approximately 5 hours, with a picnic lunch enjoyed along the route. A highlight of the day is a stop at the stunning Moiyo Waterfall, offering a perfect moment to rest and soak in the natural beauty.
Arrive at Miriakamba Hut (2,514m / 8,248ft) in the late afternoon after covering roughly 14 km (8.6 miles). ACCOMMODATION: MIRIAKAMBA HUT
DAY-3
MIRIAKAMBA HUT TO SADDLE POINT
After breakfast, begin your 4-hour trek toward Saddle Point. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch and take time to relax in the fresh mountain air.
In the afternoon, you may opt for a rewarding side trek to Little Meru (3,820m / 12,533 ft) an excellent acclimatization opportunity offering panoramic views.
Return to Saddle Hut (3,566m / 11,712 ft) for dinner and overnight stay. ACCOMMODATION: SADDLE HUT
DAY-4
MERU PEAK SUMMIT – DESCENT TO ARUSHA
Your summit adventure begins just after midnight. After tea and light snacks, set off at 12:00 AM toward Rhino Point (3,800m / 12,467 ft).
This challenging ascent leads you across rugged terrain to the spectacular Meru Peak (4,562m / 15,967 ft), where breathtaking sunrise views await. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Saddle Hut for brunch, then continue down to Mommella Headquarters, covering a total of 28 km (17 miles).
Your driver will be ready to transfer you back to Arusha for a well deserved rest. ACCOMMODATION: GOLD CREST HOTEL, ARUSHA
